Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Traffic Safety Reminders from The City of Calgary

The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not to park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.

Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible.

Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

You are probably all aware of how congested the roads around our school get in the morning and afternoon. We have four school buses that must be able to get safely in AND out of the bus zone. Please consider dropping your child/ren off further from the school and allowing them to walk.

Things to Remember:

  • In order to keep all students safe, please use your designated pathways and please do not cut through our busy parking lot.
  • The parking lot is reserved for staff members of William D. Pratt School between 7 AM to 5 PM. There is to be no parent parking at any time during those hours.
  • Also, no pick up or drop off of students in the parking lot.

Parking Lot Reminder

In order to keep all students safe, please use your designated pathways and please do not cut through our busy parking lot. Parents please refrain from picking up and dropping off students in our parking lot.

The parking lot is not to be used for parent parking or student drop off or pick up. Please use street parking only.

Be a Good Neighbour

We ask that when you pick up and drop off your child to be respectful of our neighbours. As a school, we get a number of complaints from the residents in the cul-de-sac directly across from the school, about double parking in the cul-de-sac, and blocking of driveways.

We also ask that you do not stop in front of the school, during bus drop off and pick up times, as it is very congested and the space is needed for our buses.

Traffic Concerns Around the School

All parents who drive their children to school and pick them up should be aware of the terrible congestion around the school at peak times. Unfortunately, these drivers are interfering with not only traffic flow in front of the school, but also with our neighbours. The culs-de-sac are especially troublesome. Please be aware that blocking driveways, or parking within 1.5 metres, is not only unfriendly, but also against the law and you can be ticketed. U-turns, jaywalking and parking too close to a stop sign are also things for which you may be ticketed.

We have also had incidents where drivers are blocking our busses when they attempt to leave.

Be aware that there is to be NO drop off or pick up of students in the staff parking lot at any time.

It is imperative that drivers choose SAFETY over convenience. Parking further away and allowing your child to walk to school is a good option.

Below you will find a list of the common infractions that are enforced by the City of Calgary and/or the Calgary Parking Authority and the fines related to these offences.

  • Illegal U turn - $155 U-turns are illegal between intersections, alley junctions, when prohibited by sign, at traffic signals and when unsafe. The only place to legally do a U-turn is at an intersection not controlled by lights as long as it can be done safely and there is no sign indicating that you can't.
  • Pedestrian J-walk- $78 -If there is a marked crosswalk on the block, you must use it to cross.
  • Please help to teach your children the proper way to cross the street and lead by example.
  • Impede/block traffic (double parking) - $155 - Double parking is stopping alongside another vehicle in the middle of a street to drop off your child. This adds to congestion because you are backing up traffic behind you while you let your child out of the vehicle. This also puts your child in a dangerous position as they will be walking between two cars parked after being let out. These vehicles are not expecting little ones to walk behind them and may back up into your child.
  • Disobey posted signs (includes no stopping zones) - $233
  • Fail to yield for pedestrian in crosswalk - $776
  • Failing to stop for a stop sign - $388
  • Stopping or parking in a bus zone I within 5m of crosswalk/stop sign - $75
  • Parking in front of or within 1.5 meters of driveway/garage/no parking zone - $75
