Is your child in grade 6, 7, 8 or 9 looking to try something new, or are they looking to continue on their wrestling adventure? The wrestling season is fast approaching! This is a no cut sport. As long as your child attends practices, they are eligible to compete in tournaments and join the ranks of Maverick athletes.

No experience is necessary, and all training will be provided. All your child needs are clean (never worn outside, athletic shoes with laces), a t-shirt, a pair of shorts (preferably without pockets) and a desire to compete one-on-one against another wrestler. (clothing accommodations can be made on a case-by-case basis).

By the end of this week, each student should have had a couple of days of combatives in physical education. This has given them a small taste of what to expect should they want to join the wrestling team.

Wrestling practices run Mondays and Wednesdays starting October 28th through January 27th from 2:45pm-4pm. These take place in our Auxiliary Gym.

Students will have the opportunity to compete in several wrestling tournaments this year. Parents will have to arrange transportation to and from all events. Students can win medals for individual results as well as plaques for team success at each tournament.

Your child will miss a day of school to compete for divisional banners that we can proudly display in our gym. Parents must provide transportation to this event.

Students must have wrestled in at least two tournaments to be eligible for the divisional championships.

Students will compete in one of two divisions. Novice division entails grades 6 and 7 students and the senior division are grades 8 and 9 students.

Students will wrestle other athletes of approximate weights. In tournaments, there is a 10% allowance within each weight category between the lightest and heaviest wrestler.

There is an optional meeting being held on Thursday, October 24th, at 12:04pm in the main gym for all interested students. We will be answering any questions your child may have then.

If your child is interested in joining our wrestling team and continuing on a proud legacy of Pratt wrestlers, please fill out the attached form and email it back to Mr. Vahaaho (Mr.V.) at mpvahaaho@cbe.ab.ca and Ms. Carr at chcarr@cbe.ab.ca.

More information will come to those students who sign up for the team. There is a cost of $90 for the season which includes entry to all tournament, divisionals, wrap up party, wrestling supplies and CMLSAA fees.

Please ensure you have submitted an Annual Authorization for Athletic Tryout form for your child with wrestling checked off.

Thank you and see you on the mats!

Sincerely,

Mr. Vahaaho (Head Coach), Mr. Blakeley (Assistant Coach), Mr. Dada (Assistant Coach) and Ms. Carr (Assistant Coach)
