Good afternoon Maverick Families,

Track & Field season is upon us. Your children are learning various skills across multiple track & field events during their physical education classes. These lessons will culminate in our Maverick Mayhem Track & Field mornings listed below:

  • Friday, May 3 – All Grade 8's
  • Monday, May 6 – All Grade 6's
  • Tuesday, May 7 – All Grade 9's
  • Wednesday, May 8 – All Grade 7's

We are also beginning to look at creating our WDP Track & Field teams for each grade. Athletes will be competing in the following events on June 4 at Foothills Athletic Park:

  • 60m hurdles (grades 7, 8 and 9 only)
  • 100m sprint
  • 300m sprint
  • 600m run
  • 1200m run
  • 4x100m relay
  • Long jump
  • High jump
  • Discus (grades 7, 8 and 9 only)
  • Shot Put

In order to make the track and field team, the Physical Education teachers will be looking at these four specific elements:

  1. Performance, attitude, effort & behavior during Physical Education classes.
  2. Recorded results during our grade specific “Maverick Mayhem” Track and Field Days
  3. Attendance and “coachability” during our scheduled practice times
  4. Data from the 2022 & 2023 CMLSAA Track & Field Meets

The William D. Pratt Physical Education team will be extending invitations to students who perform well during class and during the Maverick Mayhem events. Students who do not receive such an invite are still able to attend try out/practice times as there are many factors that influence one’s success on a day.  If a student wants to try out for a particular event, families should refer to the Maverick Athletic Calendars that are on the school website for information on when & where to attend. There are also QR codes at every water fountain within our school that will direct smart devices towards the Athletic Calendars as well.

We will also be looking for parent and student volunteers to accompany us on June 4. We are in need of 4 students to help run the Shot Put event during the meet.  We are looking for 4-5 adults to help support the day as well.  These parents will help run the shot put event, help check students in and out of the day, help sign out WDP track pinnies to each athlete, help set up and take down the shelters and tables we bring, and to help cheer on our student athletes.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please email Mr. Vahaaho (mpvahaaho@cbe.ab.ca) and Mr. Howat (djhowat@cbe.ab.ca).  Parents need to have a valid police check in order to volunteer.

If you have a child who takes part in high level sports and has exceptional cardiovascular fitness, please encourage them to talk to the physical education team about the potential to run the 1200m run.  We will be running a 1km run during physical education during the coming weeks but not every student is in attendance on those days.

Thank you for your continued support for both our Physical Education & Mavericks Athletics program.
